An oscillating multi-tool is the flush-cut / plunge-cut / grout / scrape machine: a small blade that vibrates through door jambs, outlet holes, nails-in-trim, and grout lines. It is not a reciprocating saw and it is not a circular saw. We match manufacturer specs and kit contents to the Amazon listings we link. Prices move, so this page does not print street prices; check current price and seller on Amazon before you buy.
This is not a shop test. Milwaukee is a Home Depot exclusive in the US. We treat the M18 FUEL oscillating tool as the HD benchmark. We do not send you to an Amazon third-party listing for it.
Starlock and universal-fit are not the same aisle. Bosch Starlock blades snap to Bosch (and other Starlock) tools. DeWalt, Craftsman, SKIL, Ryobi, and Makita on this page use a universal / OIS / adapter clamp. Milwaukee at Home Depot uses OPEN-LOK. Shop the interface before you shop a blade pack.
Quick verdict

Best compact / 12V: DeWalt DCS353B — XTREME 12V MAX brushless, 18,000 OPM, tool only. Check current price and seller on Amazon. Same job, 12V packs. Already on 20V MAX? The ATOMIC DCS354B is the compact on those batteries. Check availability on Amazon (often third-party)
Best budget: SKIL OS5920B-10 — PWR CORE 20 brushless kit with a 2.0Ah, charger, and blades. Manufacturer $110. The from-zero kit with a battery and charger in the box. Check price on Amazon

Recip saws and circular saws are a stretch, not a pick. Bosch GOP18V-28N is a real StarlockPlus cordless.
DeWalt DCS356B — best overall
Check availability on Amazon (often third-party)
If you want one cordless 20V oscillating tool and you already live in 20V MAX, this is the current XR. Brushless, 3-speed selector, Dual-Grip variable-speed trigger, Quick-Change clamp, universal accessory adapter, LED. Amazon lists 0–13,000 / 0–17,000 / 0–20,000 OPM. About 2.3–2.4 lb and 11.2 inches on retail listings. Tool only — no pack, no charger. Wood-with-nail blade, fast-cut wood blade, and the universal adapter in the carton.
Check current price and seller on Amazon for B07VBB55X5. Prefer the DCS356C1 kit (B085B253MD)? Check availability on Amazon (often third-party). Full review: DeWalt DCS356 oscillating multi-tool review.
This is not Starlock. Most aftermarket OIS / universal blades fit with the adapter. Starlock-only Bosch blades do not snap on.
Who it’s for. Already on 20V MAX or FLEXVOLT and you want a 3-speed XR for flush cuts, plunge cuts, grout, and scrape work. Same packs run a cordless drill and an impact driver.
Who it’s not for. Starting from zero — you would be buying a battery and charger on top of a tool-only box. A first kit is the SKIL OS5920B-10. Already on ONE+ or LXT? Stay there. Want 12V compact? That is the DCS353B. Want Starlock? That is the Bosch GOP40-30B, or GOP18V-28N if you already own Bosch 18V. Want the OPEN-LOK benchmark? Milwaukee at Home Depot.
Specs that matter. 20V MAX XR. Brushless. 3-speed. 0–13,000 / 0–17,000 / 0–20,000 OPM (listing). Universal Quick-Change. Tool only. Model DCS356B. Amazon listing B07VBB55X5.
Caveats. Check current price and seller on Amazon. Confirm new vs renewed, and that the title is still the DCS356B — not the ATOMIC DCS354, not the 12V DCS353, and not a DCS356D1 kit. 3-year limited warranty on the DeWalt tool.
Check availability on Amazon (often third-party)
DeWalt DCS353B — compact / 12V XTREME
Check availability on Amazon (often third-party)
Same oscillating job, 12V MAX packs. DeWalt’s official copy: brushless, up to 18,000 OPM, 3.2° oscillation angle, variable-speed trigger, trigger lock on/off, Quick-Change, universal adapter, LED. About 1.9 lb and 9.5 inches on retail listings. Wood blade, wood/metal blade, and adapter in the carton. Tool only.
Check current price and seller on Amazon.
This is 12V MAX, not 20V MAX. The packs do not swap. If you already own yellow 20V batteries and you want the compact body, that is the ATOMIC DCS354B (B07TYGKHHS). Same Quick-Change clamp, no 3-speed dial.
Who it’s for. Already on 12V MAX / XTREME and you want the small oscillating tool for punch-list flush cuts and furniture work.
Who it’s not for. Starting from zero on a second DeWalt voltage. Regular 20V MAX owners — buy the DCS356B or DCS354B, not a 12V charger. Anyone who will only buy from Amazon.com itself, unless the seller checks out at click. Anyone who wanted Starlock 12V — that is the Bosch GOP12V-28N, or Milwaukee M12 at Home Depot.
Specs that matter. 12V MAX XTREME. Brushless. 18,000 OPM. 3.2°. Universal Quick-Change. Tool only. Model DCS353B. Amazon listing B09YXNDBTW.
Caveats. Check current price and seller on Amazon. Confirm B09YXNDBTW is still the DCS353B tool-only, not a kit bundle with a no-name pack. Not the 20V ATOMIC DCS354B.
Check availability on Amazon (often third-party)
SKIL OS5920B-10 — kit if you are starting from zero
This is the Amazon kit with a battery in the box that we can actually verify: PWR CORE 20 brushless oscillating tool, 2.0Ah pack, charger, HCS wood blade, HCS segment blade, sanding pad, nine sandpapers. Digital brushless. 3.6-degree oscillating angle (SKIL). Constant-speed electronics. Vibration Reduction System — SKIL rates 80% less vibration vs SKIL models without VRS. That is SKIL’s number. Tool-free blade change, LED. SKIL lists $109.99. Check current price and seller on Amazon.
SKIL’s product page we opened did not print an OPM number. Catalog tables commonly list 11,000–17,000. Do not shop this one on a speed badge we could not read on SKIL.com.
Who it’s for. No 18V / 20V packs on the shelf and you want one oscillating kit without buying DeWalt batteries first. Full review: SKIL OS5920B-10 oscillating multi-tool review.
Who it’s not for. Already on 20V MAX, ONE+, LXT, or V20. Platform lock-in is the hidden cost. One 2.0Ah pack — when it dies, you wait. Starlock buyers — this is OIS / tool-free, not a Bosch snap-in.
Specs that matter. 20V PWR CORE 20. Brushless. 3.6°. Kit: 2.0Ah + charger + blades. Model OS5920B-10. Amazon listing B0DXRZ27WX.
Caveats. Manufacturer $110. Confirm the carton still lists the 2.0Ah and charger. Older SKIL OS5937-10 (B085FRMJK3) is a different, heavier kit. Brushed OS593002 kits are a different family.
Craftsman CMCE565B — already on V20
The V20 brushless oscillating tool. BRUSHLESS RP, variable-speed trigger Craftsman rates to 19,000 OPM, tool-free universal clamp, LED, VERSATRACK hook. Craftsman rates 57% more power than the brushed CMCE500 on a 2.0Ah. That comparison is Craftsman’s. Tool only. Sanding platen, three sandpaper sheets, bi-metal blade, and wood blade in the carton.
Check current price and seller on Amazon.
The cheaper brushed CMCE500B (B07TR74WSG) is the brushed option, and note that the “12-piece kit” copy is blades and a bag, not a battery. Fine if you already have V20 and want the cheaper body. Not the brushless pick.
Who it’s for. Already on Craftsman V20 and you want a brushless oscillating tool without XR money.
Who it’s not for. A first battery purchase — a bare tool plus a 2.0Ah and charger is not a budget kit. That kit is the SKIL. Already on 20V MAX: buy the DCS356B, not a second charger.
Specs that matter. V20 brushless RP. 19,000 OPM (Craftsman). Universal tool-free. Tool only. Model CMCE565B. Amazon listing B0B9T54BKS.
Caveats. Confirm the live page is still the CMCE565B, not the brushed CMCE500B and not the CMCE501D1 kit.
Ryobi PBLMT51B — already on ONE+
Check availability on Amazon (often third-party)
Ryobi’s current ONE+ HP oscillating tool we can open on Amazon. Gen II brushless, up to 20,000 OPM, 3.8° oscillation angle on current-gen copy, tool-free accessory release, LED, trigger with lock-on (not the Gen I slide switch). Ryobi rates 80% faster cutting, 2.5× more cuts, and 86% lower vibration vs the previous generation. Those are Ryobi’s numbers. Tool only.
Check current price and seller on Amazon.
The listing body had a stray “Stens replacement parts” sentence. Confirm the title is still PBLMT51B.
This is the PBLMT51, not the discontinued PBLMT50 (B099NRF98L). We opened that older listing; Ryobi marks it discontinued.
Who it’s for. Already in ONE+. Same packs as the rest of the green aisle.
Who it’s not for. Starting from zero. Anyone who will only buy from Amazon.com itself, unless the seller checks out at click.
Specs that matter. 18V ONE+ HP. Brushless. Up to 20,000 OPM. Tool-free. Tool only. Model PBLMT51B. Amazon listing B0D6ZPQ25M.
Caveats. Check current price and seller on Amazon. Skip third-party “kits” that tape on a no-name pack.
Check availability on Amazon (often third-party)
Makita XMT03Z — already on 18V LXT
Makita’s 18V LXT oscillating tool: brushed, variable-speed dial 6,000–20,000 OPM, 3.2° oscillation angle, soft start, tool-less blade change, 2-3/8-inch barrel grip, 12 inches long, 4.9 lb with a pack (battery not included). Adapters in the carton for competitive accessories. OIS, not Starlock. Tool only.
Check current price and seller on Amazon. Parallel listing B01KAFFT96 redirected to B00LIV11RG.
Makita rates about 20 minutes of continuous run time on a 3.0Ah. That is Makita’s number.
Who it’s for. Already on 18V LXT and you want the oscillating tool, not another platform.
Who it’s not for. A first LXT purchase. On DeWalt or Ryobi? Stay there. Anyone who wanted Starlock or a current brushless LXT.
Specs that matter. 18V LXT. Brushed. 6,000–20,000 OPM. 3.2°. OIS + adapters. Tool only. Model XMT03Z. Amazon listing B00LIV11RG.
Caveats. Confirm B00LIV11RG is still the new XMT03Z, not a renewed carton. Star-symbol LXT packs.
Bosch GOP40-30B — corded StarlockPlus
The Amazon StarlockPlus corded kit. 4.0-amp motor, 8,000–20,000 OPM, 3.0° oscillating arc, Constant Response, snap-in no-touch blade change, LED, 3.3 lb, 11 inches. Starlock and StarlockPlus accessories. Not StarlockMax — Bosch points that work at the GOP55-36. Check current price and seller on Amazon.
A 4-amp cord does not care about amp-hours. It also does not leave the outlet. The Fein-class reason to buy this instead of a 3-amp DWE315K is the StarlockPlus interface, not a shop test from us.
Who it’s for. Flush cuts and grout next to an outlet, or anyone who already owns Starlock / StarlockPlus blades and does not want another battery.
Who it’s not for. A rooftop, a crawl, or a van with no cord. Anyone who already decided cordless. Anyone who needed StarlockMax.
Specs that matter. 4.0 amp corded. 8,000–20,000 OPM. 3.0°. StarlockPlus. Model GOP40-30B. Amazon listing B01ER7J8O0.
Caveats. Confirm the live page is still GOP40-30B, not GOP40-30C (B01ER7J976) and not GOP55-36. Universal DeWalt / SKIL blades do not snap into Starlock without the right adapter — most will not.
Milwaukee 2836-20 — pro benchmark, not an Amazon buy
Milwaukee is a Home Depot line in the US. The current M18 FUEL oscillating multi-tool is the 2836-20 tool-only. Milwaukee rates a POWERSTATE brushless motor at 10,000–20,000 OPM, a 4.2° oscillation angle, a 10-setting dial plus Auto-Load, OPEN-LOK tool-free blade change, a 180° LED, and vibration dampening. Auto-Load starts around 15,000 OPM and ramps to 20,000 under load — that is the Milwaukee manual, not a test from us.
The 12V compact at Home Depot is the M12 FUEL 2526-20: 10,000–20,000 OPM, 3.9°, OPEN-LOK. That is the HD 12V benchmark next to the DCS353B, not an Amazon link.
Who it’s for. Pros, or DIY buyers who already live in M18 (or M12) and can pick the tool up at Home Depot.
Who it’s not for. Anyone we would send to Amazon. Marketplace copies of a Home Depot exclusive are not first-party stock.
Caveats. Confirm the Home Depot price in the store or on HD’s page. OPEN-LOK is not Starlock.
Stretch / adjacent — recips, circulars, Starlock cordless, corded 3-amp
A reciprocating saw and a 7-1/4 circular saw cut different jobs. They are not on this buy list. The Bosch GOP18V-28N (B01N37OSRF) is a real 18V StarlockPlus cordless — 20,000 OPM, 2.8°, 2.7 lb. The GOP12V-28N (B075LXVL19) is a real 12V Starlock listing. The DeWalt DWE315K (B00DQH1K2Q) is the universal-fit corded pick here: a 3-amp kit; check current price and seller on Amazon. The StarlockPlus GOP40-30B is the Starlock corded pick. We do not link the Fein MultiMaster on Amazon. Do not buy a recip because an oscillating page mentioned one.
Buying guide
Interface first. Universal / OIS / adapter (DeWalt, Craftsman, SKIL, Ryobi, Makita) takes most aftermarket blades, sometimes with the adapter in the carton. Starlock / StarlockPlus (Bosch) snaps in and will not eat a random hardware-store blade. OPEN-LOK (Milwaukee) is Home Depot. Buying the wrong 50-pack is how these tools get expensive.
OPM is not torque. 20,000 OPM on a 2.0Ah SKIL kit is not the same cut as 20,000 OPM on an M18 high-output pack, or on a 4-amp StarlockPlus cord. Shop the motor, the oscillation angle, the interface, and the battery you already own.
12V vs 18V / 20V. A 12V XTREME or M12 tool is the compact punch-list body. It is a different battery family. Do not buy DCS353B because it is cheaper than a DCS356B if your shelf is already 20V MAX.
Corded vs cordless. A 4-amp GOP40-30B does not care about amp-hours. Buy corded next to an outlet, especially if you already own Starlock blades. Buy cordless if the work moves, or if you already paid for the batteries. A kit from zero is a battery purchase that happens to include an oscillating tool.
Platform lock-in. DeWalt 20V MAX, DeWalt 12V MAX, Ryobi ONE+, Craftsman V20, Makita LXT, SKIL PWR CORE 20, Bosch 18V, and Milwaukee M18 / M12 do not share packs. Already own a cordless drill kit? Buy the oscillating tool that eats those batteries. Brand comparison: DeWalt vs Milwaukee vs Ryobi.
Kit vs tool only. Only the SKIL OS5920B-10 on this page is a verified kit with a pack and charger. Everything cordless else is tool only. A bare tool is not a deal if you still have to buy a 2.0Ah and a charger.
Third-party and stock. Check current price and seller on Amazon. Buy Home Depot exclusives at Home Depot, not from third-party Amazon sellers.
The other garage tools. Demo through studs is a reciprocating saw. Same-day framing is a circular saw. Fasteners are an impact driver.
FAQ
Which oscillating multi-tool should I buy in 2026? Already on 20V MAX: DCS356B. Already on 12V MAX: DCS353B. Already on ONE+: PBLMT51B. Already on V20: CMCE565B. Starting from zero: SKIL OS5920B-10. Want Starlock on a cord: GOP40-30B. Already on M18: Milwaukee at Home Depot.
Do I need Starlock? Only if you are buying into Bosch blades or you already own them. StarlockPlus on the GOP40-30B is the reason that corded kit earns a slot. Everyone else on this page is universal / OIS / OPEN-LOK. Do not mix a Starlock-only pack with a DeWalt clamp and expect it to snap in.
Is 20V better than 18V? Not in the way the carton implies. DeWalt 20V MAX, Craftsman V20, and SKIL 20V sit in the same nominal 18V world as Ryobi ONE+, Makita LXT, and Milwaukee M18. 12V MAX and M12 are a smaller platform. Shop the motor, the interface, and the batteries you already own.
Should I just buy Milwaukee? If you already own M18, buy the 2836-20 at Home Depot. If you already own M12, that is the 2526-20. They are the OPEN-LOK benchmark, not an Amazon recommendation. We are not sending you to a gray-market listing.
Do I need a corded oscillating tool? Only if you cut next to an outlet and you do not want another battery — or you already live in Starlock blades. Most homeowners who already own 18V / 20V packs are happier cordless.
What about a recip or a circular saw? Adjacent, not a substitute. This page is oscillating multi-tools. A recip hangs a 6- or 9-inch blade and pushes through studs. A circular saw rips a 2x and a sheet.
