A pancake compressor is the 6-gallon, oil-free, low-center-of-gravity machine most people actually buy. It sits flat, it will run a nailer, blow off a saw, and top off tires. It will not keep a 1/2-inch impact wrench singing through rusted lug nuts, and it will not paint a door. Shop CFM at 90 PSI, not the horsepower number on the carton.

If you want one compressor for a garage and a weekend of trim, this is it. Six gallons, oil-free, 150 PSI max, 2.6 CFM @ 90 PSI. Same air class as the DeWalt and Ridgid pancakes. Check current price and seller on Amazon. Enough for brad, finish, and a framing nailer with a pause between bursts. Not enough for a 1/2-inch impact wrench or a paint gun.
Who it’s for. Homeowners and remodelers who need a portable pancake for nailers, blowing off a saw, and topping off tires. It lives in a detached garage or on a driveway. If you already own a hose and fittings, buy the compressor. You do not need a kit.
Who it’s not for. Indoor trim in a finished house — pancakes in this class are loud. Also the wrong machine for two framing nailers or rusted lug nuts. That is the Metabo’s job, and even the Metabo has limits.

Caveats. Confirm the live price. Oil-free pancakes at this price are known for tired pressure switches, cracked shrouds, and pumps that get noisy after a few dusty seasons. Drain the tank. If the Amazon price looks high, check the DeWalt or the Ridgid at Home Depot before you pay extra for the same 2.6 CFM. Buyers who already live in DeWalt yellow, want that service network, or found this one cheaper than the Bostitch the day they shop. 165 PSI vs the Bostitch’s 150 PSI stores a little more air in the same 6-gallon tank. CFM at 90 PSI is still 2.6. Nailers, inflation, blow-off. Not a shop compressor.
Who it’s not for. Anyone paying a premium for the logo when the Bostitch is in stock. The air delivery is not better. It is also not quiet. If noise is why you opened a compressor tab, use the quiet compressor page.

Metabo HPT EC914S — best high-flow pancake
This is the only pancake on the page that changes what you can run. Metabo HPT rates the EC914S at 4.0 CFM @ 90 PSI and 5.1 CFM @ 40 PSI, with a 6-gallon pancake that fills to 200 PSI. That is about 50 percent more flow than the Bostitch / DeWalt / Ridgid class, and more air stored above 90 PSI. Use Amazon listing B08DSCLXSC for the compressor only — not a hose or splitter bundle.
Who it’s for. People who outgrew a 2.6 CFM pancake. Metabo rates it to run two framing nailers, two roofing or siding nailers, three 15- or 16-gauge finish nailers, or five 18-gauge brads. That is the manufacturer’s claim, not a test from us. The numbers do support more nails between recoveries. 42 lb, oil-free, two 1/4-inch couplers, 13.5 amps, 1.3 HP running.
Who it’s not for. Quiet indoor trim. Metabo publishes 76 dB (ISO 3744). It is a jobsite pancake, heavier than the Bostitch-class units, and the wrong buy if you only shoot 18-gauge in a closet. Save the money and get the Bostitch.

Ridgid rates the OF60150HB at 2.6 SCFM @ 90 PSI, 3.5 SCFM @ 40 PSI, 150 PSI max, oil-free, 6-gallon steel pancake, 12 amps, 35 lb, 80 dBA. Dual universal quick couplers (automotive and industrial 1/4-inch), locking regulator, 1/4-turn ball-valve drain, 3-year limited warranty. On paper it is the Bostitch’s twin with a better drain and a longer warranty.
Who it’s for. Shoppers already in a Home Depot, or anyone who wants a 3-year Ridgid warranty on the same 2.6 CFM class as the Amazon pancakes.
Who it’s not for. Anyone we would send to Amazon. Ridgid pancakes are a Home Depot line. Marketplace Amazon listings exist. They are third-party or renewed, not first-party stock of this exclusive. We are not linking those.
Caveats. Confirm the Home Depot price in the store or on HD’s page. 80 dBA is a loud pancake. Same CFM limits as the Bostitch and DeWalt: nailers yes, impact wrenches only in short bursts. If HD is out and Amazon has the Bostitch in stock, buy the Bostitch. Do not pay a gray-market premium to have this Ridgid shipped in a random box.
Quiet alternatives — not pancakes
The California Air Tools units on our quiet page are not pancakes. They are small-tank, slow-pump machines built around a decibel number.
The 2010A (check availability on Amazon, often third-party) is 60 dB, 2.20 CFM @ 90 PSI, 2-gallon aluminum, manufacturer $235. Check current price and seller on Amazon. The 1P1060S is 56 dB, 1.20 CFM @ 90 PSI. Buy one if the pancake will live under a bedroom. Do not buy one if you wanted 6 gallons of reserve.
How to pick a pancake
CFM at 90 PSI is the number. Horsepower is the marketing. A tool’s manual lists air consumption in CFM. Your compressor’s useful output is CFM @ 90 PSI (sometimes written SCFM). The Bostitch, DeWalt, and Ridgid all land on 2.6. The Metabo lands on 4.0. Peak horsepower on a pancake carton does not change that ranking.
Max PSI is stored air, not flow. 150 (Bostitch, Ridgid), 165 (DeWalt), and 200 (Metabo) are how full the same 6-gallon tank gets. More pressure above your regulator setting is a longer burst. It is not more CFM. The Metabo’s real upgrade is 4.0 CFM, not the 200 PSI sticker.
Pancake shape is stability. The tank is a flat disc. That is why these units ride in a truck. It is also why they are loud: a steel disc is a drum, and the pump on top is not a slow California Air Tools motor.
One coupler vs two. The Metabo ships two 1/4-inch brass couplers. The Ridgid ships dual universal couplers (automotive and industrial). The Bostitch and DeWalt are single-user machines unless you add a splitter. Two nailers still need the Metabo’s CFM, not just a second fitting.
Kits vs bare compressor. The Craftsman CMEC6150K is a real 6-gallon, 2.6 CFM pancake with a 13-piece kit. Check current price and seller on Amazon (B07KHHDJGD). If you already own a hose, buy the compressor. Do not wait on an out-of-stock carton.
Oil-free, circuit, weight. Every pancake here is oil-free. Drain the tank. Keep the intake filter clean. The Ridgid is 12 amps and 35 lb. The Metabo is 13.5 amps and 42 lb. A skinny extension cord on a 13.5-amp pancake is how you trip a breaker. Use a real 15-amp circuit.

The DeWalt if that listing is the cheaper 2.6 CFM unit the day you shop, or you want the badge. The Metabo EC914S if 2.6 CFM is the bottleneck.
How much CFM do I need? Brad and finish nailers: 2.6 CFM @ 90 PSI is plenty; 1.20 CFM on a quiet 1-gallon unit is the floor. Framing, roofing, or two nailers: start at 2.6 and look hard at the Metabo’s 4.0. Inflation and blow guns: any of them. If you cannot find a CFM number on the tool, look up that model.
Can a pancake run a 1/2-inch impact wrench? In short bursts, the Metabo is the only one here with a serious chance (4.0 CFM @ 90 PSI, 200 PSI tank). The 2.6 CFM pancakes will fill a tank, give you a few pulls, then recover. None of these replaces a 20-gallon or larger shop compressor for rusted hardware or production work.
Is the Ridgid a better deal than the Bostitch? On spec they are the same class: 6 gal, 2.6 CFM @ 90 PSI, 150 PSI, oil-free. The Ridgid adds a ball-valve drain and a 3-year warranty. In the store, buy the Ridgid. Ordering online, buy the Bostitch. Skip third-party Amazon listings of the Ridgid.
Should I buy a pancake or a quiet compressor? Pancake if the machine lives in a garage or on a jobsite and you want 6 gallons of reserve. Can I paint or sand with these? Not in any way you will enjoy. HVLP spray guns and air sanders want continuous volume these tanks cannot hold. You will get a few seconds of spray, then a long recovery, then orange peel. Use these compressors for fasteners, inflation, and blow-off. Rent or buy a larger stationary unit for paint and sanding.
